So I'm running this little race.
My 5th marathon and 1st ultramarathon. This one is a 50K. I picked it because it would be a good opportunity to run an ultra that was a road race and not a trail race. I've got no skillz in trail running. Not yet anyway. It came at just the right time after my Houston training so it's not like I was starting from scratch. Houston was basically my longest run and I tapered from there. We'll see how that works. Fingers crossed.
Am I nervous? Uh, well, I guess I should be. But I'm just dumb enough to not be scared. In my mind it's only 5 more miles. What's 5 more miles, right? Well, if you had asked me that about mile 22 of my last marathon I would have give you lazer eyes. I promise I'm going to slow down a teensy bit after Cowtown.
Okay, teensy might be an exaggeration. I did schedule my first 5K of the season for the very next weekend. I know, I know, crazy town. It's a very small local race benefitting the high school. It was only $19 to enter and I figure I'll run slow enough to se the bar real low. Room for improvement, right?
My training has gone well, relatively pain free. I've managed to stay flu free. Let's hope that I can stay that way the rest of the week. So now I only need to worry about the logistics of getting there and, finally and most importantly, what to wear.
I bought a cute new pink shirt for Houston. But didn't wear it because it turned out to be about a thousand degrees so I opted for a tank instead. Now, I have lots of grubby old tanks. But only one that is super cute, fits really nicely and makes me feel fast. And I wore that for my last race. With, the saggy, baggy, too big shorts that have now been relegated to a box in the closet.
A quick peek at Runningwarehouse.com and lookee what I see...
Cuteness in the form of the Nike Apple Green collection. This is my most favorite tank, the Nike Pacer. Cause y'all know I'm a Nike girl. Through and through.
Of course, I'll wear the traditional double pink bow. And prolly a pink hat if it is raining. Which it just might. And my pink Zensah leg hugs. So you know I'll be sporting plenty o' pink. No worries there.
Other than my fashion conundrums, I'm just trying to be all chill this week. Went to yoga yesterday and today. I'll run tomorrow and Thursday. And more yoga Wednesday and Friday. Lots of extra water and sleep. Desperately trying to keep the drama at bay. Carb loading like the semi-pro that I am.
And some reflection. Reflection on why I'm running this crazy long race in the first place. On what I'm trying to prove to myself. I do have a lot to prove and I'm very hopeful that I'll find it out on that course.
And as I cross that finish line (and I will cross that finish line) I'll carry with me this verse, this verse that I've carried in my heart for months now.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
I'm not afraid.

There's a song that my choir sings sometimes based on that verse. The refrain goes: "we will run and not grow weary, for our God will be our strength. We will fly like the eagle, we will rise again." Run hard, girl.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Good luck! I will pray for you!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just love how the clothes make you turbo fast. If only I were teeny tiny like you, I'd have you send them to me so they could make me turbo fast for my races! =P
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note, it brought a tear to my eye to hear you feel you have a lot to prove to yourself. Please don't put that weight on your shoulders, on your sometimes wonky hip, on your heart, and in your head. This race will be a reflection of your hard work and dedication to this sport - one you LOVE. It will show how your determination outranks your circumstances. It will demonstrate how strong you are in mind, body, and spirit, BUT not necessarily in your performance. No, it's much more than that. It's in that you didn't curl up in a ball and die inside. It's because you are out there taking care of business, doing your best. Who can ask for more?
I think you are amazing. I just want you to know that.
Ahhh I'm so excited/nervous for you. It's going to be HARD (but then again your first marathon was probably HARD and now look at you!)
ReplyDeleteI'll be sending good thoughts your way ALL day and anxiously watching Twitter/your blog for news!
Love how you have those super magic clothes that will give you lots of luck and speed! :)
ReplyDeleteYou will do great, you sound very prepared mentally and physically.
ReplyDeleteI do like that nike outfit, and I always seem to run faster when I think I look good :-)
BTW, you mentioned a few posts ago that you were doing a run less run faster program? I'd love to hear more about it!
50k?!? Good Luck! That is such an exciting feat for you. Fingers crossed (not that you need that) ;-)
ReplyDeleteI wish i was in town so i could cheer for you!! LOVE the apple green-so cute!! have an amazing run!!
ReplyDeleteGirl.. you are going to rock it!!! PS.. I think you need that outfit! :)
ReplyDeleteWow...I am still struggling with the 42km thing...wishing you all the best for race day.
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't be afraid. I know you will kill it out there. This is the perfect 50k because like you said, it's a road 50k. Although, I'm a a trail nerd, a 50k on trails would almost be easier for me because you can't "race" it. Don't push too hard, k? Five more miles is still serious business.
ReplyDeleteYou'll do great! I love the outfit! I am very partial to green and pink when I run (makes me feel super fast and fashionable) :) Keep us updated!
ReplyDeleteYou will do great on your run! And seriously think about how cute we'd look together... you in all your pink and me in green...... I think we'd be precious in a run!
ReplyDeletePink and green? Yes, please! I love how we justify things to ourselves... Only 5 more miles. LOL. Sign me up. Have a great race, so excited for you, ultragirl!
ReplyDeletesuper cute top!
ReplyDeletei'm so pumped for you and this race. you are going to smash it.
Wow wow wow - 50k! That's amazing. i am entering my first 10k this year. Taking inspiration from you, I will use this as an excuse to buy some cute new gear! the items you've found are super cute! Good luck for the run! x
ReplyDelete:) Wow, major inspiration! Good luck to you! I can't wait for your recap.
ReplyDeleteI think I share that mindset with you, "What's 5 more miles?" haha. Though it might be years before I try something as amazing as a 50k.
Remember to enjoy the day... you only get one 'First time"!
ReplyDeleteI'm a total chicken & afraid of that extra 5 miles. I've finally found a happy groove on the 26 & I'm going to try to do a few this year instead of trying to go further. I'm really hoping I hold up this year injury free even though I'm increasing mileage & overall wear/tear on my body. Cross-training, stretching and yoga are my first line of defense against injury this year. Any other tips?
ReplyDeleteNO FEAR TPG!!! No fear at all!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear how it goes. In the during time, know I am praying you a strong finish!! You CAN and you WILL beat it! :)
You are going to do awesome! I can't WAIT to see how you did!!!! Good luck chica! You are an inspiration to us all!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! you can do it, 5 more miles for you is easy peasy! Just believe and it will happen!
