Always.
When I was very small, my favorite book was The Fourteen Bears Summer and Winter.
A story of a family of bears, it's actually two books in one, telling the tales of both Summer and then, predictably, Winter. I would pour over the pages detailing the little bear houses - they each had their own! I loved it so, we even had a rule, I could only read it once before bedtime. Once. It was a rather long book and I'd beg to have it read over and over. I could read as early as 3, but I loved being read to. Aren't those some of the most sacred moments between a parent and child, reading together?
Another favorite was a different type of story, an album (yes, actual vinyl!) with a booklet accompanying it. It was a Winnie the Pooh story. Oh, probably not an A.A. Milne, but a Disney mini. I certainly didn't mind. I loved this album. In fact, I still have it! And yes, I have a turntable on which to play it.
I'd put on the headphones and read along with the story. The part about woozles always scared me and I'd skip to the next page unless someone was reading along with me!
What do these have in common? Well, bears of course! Who doesn't love a bear? And what do bears love? Honey!
Last year I purposed to like peanut butter. This was a huge success for I now consume copious amounts of peanut butter. Turns out I quite like the natural peanut butter, you know, containing only peanuts? Blech to that skippy/jiffy oily stuff. Well, this year, I purposed to learn to like honey. A natural sweetener, I never really cared for it. Until now. I love a good peanut butter, banana and flax seed sandwich. Oh yes, don't forget the honey! Mmm. Of course, I buy local honey. Go Texan!
So here is your chance to wind up with some sweet Texas honey. (in an oh so adorable bear) Honey, y'all! And maybe even a few other things...
Leave a comment telling me your favorite childhood book or the book you most enjoyed reading to your kiddos. You don't have to become a follower, or tweet about it, or like me on facebook or any of that. Just tell me about your favorite childhood book. It's that simple!
I'll pick two random winners on Monday, September 5th.
"'We'll be friends forever, won't we Pooh?' asked Piglet
'Even longer,' Pooh answered." A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh
I read to both Things from when they were itty, like 6 months old, until very recently. T1's favorites were Love You Forever, Are You My Mother?, Where the Wild Things Are (he IS the Wild Thing) & we read the 1st 6 HP books together. Thing 2 liked Hop on Pop & absolutely cracked up at Eeyore' birthday book, where Piglet pops the balloon. Still sends him into giggles!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little, I love Babykins and His Family by Richard Scarry. Right now, my 2 year old loves to read Bernstein Bears books. One of my favorite books to read to my girls is A Goodnight Walk, by Elisha Cooper, who, I found out from Running Times, is a runner!
ReplyDeleteI always loved "Are you my Mother?" What a great book.. I love reading it to the girls now.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I read tons of books too & loved various serious (hello sweet valley high & Nancy Drew), but I also had a whole set of the Bernstein Bears books.
ReplyDeleteSwan Princess .... i still have it xx
ReplyDeleteI LOVE books!! They are something that I use very frequently in my work as a music therapist. I take books with short stanzas and put them to a song...it is like magic for young minds! One of my favorites is Snowmen at Night. I also love Llama Llama Red Pajama (check this one out, the pictures are PRICELESS!!). I could go on and on...but I will stop here. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI love natural peanut butter and honey. Mmmmm!Reading has always been my first love. I don't remember my parents reading any books to me, but I do remember the first book I was able to read myself. It was Pongo & Perdita - a little Disney book. It's sort of a prequel to 101 Dalmatian's.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite books growing up were always by Judy Blume. The funny ones about a boy named Fudge and of course the coming-of-age books. I still like to browse through them.
I still read like it's my full-time job and go through about 4 books a week!
I had a book called "Katie the Kitten." Oh, and the Bernstein Bears books. And the nursery rhymes books! I loved books. Still do. :)
ReplyDeleteMy first favorite book was The Little Red Hen. I had memorized the whole book when I was 3 and half, pausing at the right time and turning the pages when appropriate. My parents thought I was gifted, but in fact, I just have a strong memory :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite when I was very young was Guess How Much I Love You. I even had the two bunny rabbits that went along with the story!
ReplyDelete:)

ReplyDeletei LOVED alice in wonderland growing up. i would make my mom read the entire book to me during sleepless nights with ear infections, i had lots of them. my poor mom probably knows that book by heart.
I remember my mom reading to me "My Mom is a Runner". It's about a mom who runs and her two little boys who watch her run and at the end of the story she runs a race and the kids get ice cream :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE the simplicity of your contest -- I think this is how all contests should be run! And I could certainly use some Texas honey out here in Virginia. ;)

ReplyDeleteI know in my Friday Faves interview I said I loved Amelia Bedelia as a kid...which is true...BUT then I remembered I also adored Miss Nelson is Missing! (remember Viola Swamp?) Oh how I have always loved to read! So many memories!!!
Oooo, I like this one. My favorite book to read the kid is Have You Seen My Cat. It's so simple that even the two-year-olds can repeat the lines with you. Also, we love The Relatives Came. We have a big family and love visiting them!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved to read! I've never heard of The Fourteen Bears, but I remember the Bernstein Bears. My favorite book was The Velveteen Rabbit. I read it over and over and hoped my stuffed animals knew how much I loved them!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little I had a Rainbow Brite book that I LOVED!!! (so glad she's kinda coming back.)
ReplyDeleteThe kids book I love now is the Going to Bed Book. Super cute.
My favorite children's book is "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" I've read it so many times I think I might even be able to still quote it. As I got older I loved Laura Ingalls books then moved on to The Babysitter's Club, etc...
ReplyDeleteOh and I'm so excited Anna mentioned the Velveteen Rabbit!!! I have that still from my childhood and felt the same way!
I used to read for hours and hours on the weekends as a kid. Who didn't love the Laura Ingalls series (even went to see the house Manley built for Laura in MO!) . Other faves were Little Women and a Little Princess.
