Might just maim us a little bit.
Little bit.
I have a bucket list of races I'd like to do. Two lists actually. One realistic and another, well, let's just say it's reaching a bit. The kill you/maim you race. Like Comrades. I'd love to run Comrades but who are we kidding? There are a few races on this list that I dare not even say out loud, not even to myself because they are so far fetched and crazy. Kind of like me.
I do have some super duper races planned for 2012. Naw, I'm not spilling the beans on those just yet. But it's because of those top secret super d-duper races that my latest scathingly brilliant plan will just have to wait until 2013. Let's just say my March and April are already quite full. So 2013 it is.
Oh yes, I'm already planning on 2013. First off, check out this elevation chart.
The race is in the dessert so, natch, I'll be running on sand the entire time. Nice. Oh, and you are required to carry a 35 pound rucksack. For the entire marathon. Yes, it's a marathon. There's a shorter 14.2 mile course, but why bother?
And did I mention the name includes "death march?"
That's right folks it's the Bataan Memorial Death March. Held each Spring in New Mexico. If you aren't familiar, during WWII, tens of thousands of allied POWs were forced to march through the Philippine jungles. Thousands died horrible deaths. Those that survived were forever changed. I'd love to have the opportunity to make this trek to remember and honor those that made that fateful walk in 1942. I'd love to have the opportunity to do so while there are still survivors left.
I'm currently trying to convince my buddy Al to do this. I managed to talk him into MCM so it's looking good. Plus, he's still active duty so it's not like he isn't in shape for it. Derek could probably be convinced. (and probably take home a medal - he's a bad @ss for sure - ran a 50 miler this weekend just one week after running a sub 4 marathon in Ft Worth!)
I'm not sure how to train for a sandy, dessert race during the winter months of this flat, non dessert terrain I call home, but I've got all of 2012 to figure that out.
What crazy race plans dance around in your head? Which race scares you so much you just have to do it!?!?

You should do the Little Rock Marathon - it has the largest medal!
ReplyDeleteI was just making my 2012 list race today! I have to admit, all of the races on my list scare me, as I'm shooting to move from 5k to 10k next year. There is NO WAY I could do the Bataan Memorial Death March! As much as I would like to in honor of my grandfather (a WWII vet who passed away this year) I have no desire to ever run any marathon, let alone a marathon in the desert with a 35 pound rucksack!
ReplyDeleteanything with "death march" in the title sounds just a smidge intimidating... but more power to you!! I am super impressed!
ReplyDeleteWell, after reading Run! by Dean Karnaze, I thought it was a 50-miler that scared me. Now that just seems plain whimpy, lol! Actually, the 70.3 or IM scares the crud out of me (because of the swim).
ReplyDeleteYep, that's officially an insane race. But it sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe Bataan Death March race sounds incredible! I teach history so I definitely have a special place in my heart:)
ReplyDeleteAs much as I run, I've never completed a full marathon, so I'd say that is first on my list! Any will do:)
Wow girly! That is an insane race!!! You should totally go for it!!! There is one 25k that I have run years ago that still intimidates me...25k and 18 steep hills! Killer but nothing like yours!!
ReplyDeleteYou are insane. My pulse raced just looking at that elevation chart. Seriously, though, you are hard core. Right now so much is up in the air for me, that I'm not thinking about races beyond the spring yet.
ReplyDeleteI love that everyone is calling you insane and I read this and went, hmmm, 2013, eh??
ReplyDeleteWhoa. Drunk post?
ReplyDeletehaha :)
This is very exciting! I like that you like to continually push yourself into unknown territory.
For me, Catalina was scary, with its crazy elevation and all, but, I loved every single second of it--amazing. I'd do it again in a heartbeat! And, as you know, my Bucket List race is Comrades. One day, one day I will do it. I will.
