Well, It's Here

2012
It’s been here nearly a week now and I am, uncharacteristically, late to the game.

I had every intention to post a 2011 in review, I did.  Recap of the year in races perhaps.  Started a “letter to 2011 me” several times.  But in all honesty, 2011 punched me in the nuts face. Repeatedly.  I really have no desire to wax nostalgic for 2011.  In total I had about 3.75 hours of good times in 2011 but the rest of it can just disappear into hazy oblivion as far as I’m concerned.

Ahem.

Like last year, I rang in the New Year with a run.  This time a solid 13 miles comfortably below my marathon pace.  I enjoy night running this time of year, the lights are so beautiful.  I wish we decorated our homes with light displays for every holiday!  Arriving home, I half expected some great weight to be lifted, that magically all the ugliness from 2011 would be gone, poof, just like that, simply because the calendar turned.

And in many ways, it was.  Waking up entirely too early on January 1, I headed to Allen to volunteer for the second race of the New Year’s Double.  What a great way to start the year, cheering on your friends and seeing so many accomplish their goals on this New Day, New  Year!  Robert and I handed out shirts and challenger plates so we got to see firsthand, fresh off the course, the excited faces of the runners.

If you’ve never volunteered at a race, resolve to remedy that in 2012.  It is a very rewarding experience.  Plus, we owe it to the racing community to pay back just a bit of what we receive, no?

The 5K and half marathoners all in, I wandered over to my many frunners to cheer on Greg (aka Ultra Ninja) as he finished his second marathon in 24 hours.  We toasted the new year thanks to Heidi and Brian. We hugged, high fived, joked and soaked up the warm sun of this brisk morning.
Surrounded by friends.  That’s how I started my year.

Surrounded by friends.  That’s my hope for you in 2012.
