Soundtrack to My Life

In olden days, I was the one thumbing through your CD wallet in the car, making suppositions about your personality based on those shiny discs.  Now that we all hoard our music in digital format, it’s more challenging to snoop into your musical soul. Sigh.

Pick up my phone and if you can crack the code, you can check out what I’m listening to these days.  I always have earbuds with me.  Always.  What can I say, I like my tunes.
We all like to think that we have multifarious musical taste, but the reality is we usually aren’t really that diverse.  While I admittedly have slightly obsessive tendencies, I am wont to find a favorite song, fall head over heels in love and listen to it ad nauseum.

Music is certainly one of my love languages. It gives me a special thrill to burn just the right playlist for a friend. And I take great care to craft just the perfect playlists for my own listening enjoyment.  I suppose as much as it pains us to admit it, the songs we listen to the most probably SAY the most about us. Or at least where we are right now. When I did my Friday Faves series last summer profiling different bloggers, two of the questions I asked were “What is your favorite song?” and “What song has the most plays?” Those are your real favorites.
So I checked trusty ole iTunes once again, this time for the Top 25 songs that I’ve played. Ever. Like since the beginning of iTunes. Narrowing it down to the Top Two, you’re getting an accurate picture of my real favorites, regardless of what I claim. Interesting only to me, I’m sure.

#2 This Kind ofLove Sister Hazel

Apparently I vacillate between hopeful and utter despair. No in-between. Nice to know.  Well, last night I finally moved all of my music over from an old computer to my current.  And taking a deep breath, finally synced my mobile devices to the new computer as well.  Quel nightmare, I lost my playlists!  Momentarily, I was devastated.  I have spent so many hours over the years putting together the perfect playlists!  Where was Pink?  And Navy and Taupe?  Arrrrgh.

Then it hit me; starting over.  Yes, I could waste my time, searching my folders for those lost playlists.  I’m sure iTunes has them stored somewhere.  Yes, I could painstakingly try to recreate them from memory.  OR, I could see this as an opportunity for a clean slate.  Forget the past and look to the future.  And that’s just what I’ll do.  This time, I won’t include a Blue playlist.  (sad songs)  Or any other melancholy, sentimental crap.  This time they’ll all be Hot Pink, Bright Orange and Rainbow Sparkles!

So I set about the business of making a couple of playlists to get me through the week.  And I was up until well past midnight, clicking and dragging, thinking of the new memories I’ll make with my new soundtrack.

Mysteriously, Love the Way You Lie didn’t transfer over to my new computer.  I. Cannot. Find. It.  Just as well.  I don’t care to ever hear that song again, to ever be reminded of just why I listened to it so often that it became #1 most played.  It’s played out.

And #2?  Oh, it made it the transfer. And this morning I treated myself to a singular ticket to see them perform live next month.  Yes, I’m taking myself to see one of my favorite bands!
So on this May 1, I’m starting over with a clean slate.  Eager to learn what will become to the new soundtrack to my life.

How bout you? What is your MOST played song?

  1. I love this!!! You're right...you have a clean slate! I have so many playlists that bring back memories for me that I really should just delete! We used to play a game in college when one of use were stressing about something (usually guys or relationships). We would say whatever song on the radio when we turned it on was the answer to that relationship question....boy was that interesting!!

    1. Oooh, I'm taking a road trip with a girl friend soon, we shall play this game and I'll name it after you!

  2. When you mentioned this on Twitter yesterday, I thought you lost all your songs!! Losing playlists sounds a lot less dramatic. I don't have an ipod and my mp3 player doesn't tell me what my most played song is. I also rarely make playlists. I usually just play all my music on shuffle (I'm so boring) and occasionally will hand-pick artists and shuffle them. I suspect that I'll change my ways a bit when I get an ipod (rumor has it I'm getting one for my birthday).
    Have fun starting fresh!

  3. You are too cool for words! Love this post.

That would be a really hard thing to do--not sure I am brave enough! Kudos to you.

  4. I think it's kinda nice to have to start over. I'm kind of a pack rat, even with my music...I may grow tired of songs, but I refuse to get rid of them.

  5. That is a great idea! I need to start over too.. my playlists are getting so boring to me now.

I'm not young enough to have playlists that represent particular times in my life... we only had CD's and walkmans. so old. so old.

I'll have to let you know on the most played song later tonight. My itunes is on my home computer.

    1. Oh gosh, I've only had an iPod since they came out with the 2nd gen nano - in pink! Less than 10 years for sure. But there is a playlist for EVERY occasion in life, right?
Can't wait to learn your most played song!

  7. I love your color named playlists! My most played song is Sailing to Nowhere by Broken Bells, which I saw and thought "what?" I have no recollection of ever choosing that song to play. Maybe my husband listens to it a lot. No. 2 is Just a Girl by No Doubt. That is probably me.:)

  8. I think it's awesome you're going to the Sister Hazel show. You're gonna have a blast!

My most played song: "Is There A Ghost In My House," Band of Horses. I still love the band and the song; but listening to it now, I am glad my soundtrack and my life have changed.

  10. I used to make mixed tapes and burn CD's for my friends all the time. I relate everything in my life to some song or another. I got a new computer too a few months ago, so my iTunes only shows the top plays since I got the computer, not for all time. So right now my most played song is "Why Am I the One" by Fun. But before this computer, my most played was "Cath..." by Death Cab. I'm really glad that changed. Starting over is good sometimes. (My post didn't make it to the Friday Faves tab? Sad panda.)
